Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site (Identity)

More than a century after the construction of the Hospital de Sant Pau, an ambitious restoration project has recovered the glory of this cultural and artistic architectural complex, the most important work of Lluis Domenech i Montaner and one of the the world’s largest “Catalan Modernist” sites.

With this restoration, Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site becomes a reference point for the city of Barcelona, a place where tradition and innovation can be seen side by side.

Identity Rhombus

The logo for Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site is based on the idea of a rhombus as a container.

This geometric shape is one of the cornerstones Lluis Domenech i Montaner’s project, and appears in all areas of the building, as well as in the original logo. It also appears on the identity of the city of Barcelona and its heraldry.

The empty rhombus is used as a container for the various uses of the new space: conference and congress hall, workspace, home to prestigious institutions (University of the United Nations, Casa Asia, World Health Organisation, the City Resilience Programme of UN-Habitat, the Global Network of Universities for innovation …).

45 degrees

One of the peculiarities of this historic building is its position within the Barcelona urban grid.

Placed at a 45 degrees angle to the adjacent streets of the Eixample de Cerdà, the former hospital buildings form a square inside the enclosure.

The identity is inspired by the duality between the rhombus and square shapes.
