El projecte i l’execució

The history behind the conception and subsequent construction of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is long, complex and, to a certain extent, exceptional. In fact, this hospital is possible thanks to the coincidence in time of many circumstances and the intervention of several actors, starting with the patron, Pau Gil, or the architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

That of Sant Pau is also an exceptional case because a lot of documentation related to the construction has been preserved, documentation that the vast majority of times ends up being lost once the work is completed: contracts, certifications, invoices, personnel records, payments and, of course, blueprints. More than 2,000 are kept in the Historical Archive of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, of which, inevitably, only a small sample is presented in this book.
